Wounded Warrior Project Veteran’s Bike Ride

The Chesapeake Children’s Museum staff with the
help of volunteers pictured, helped participate in
the Wounded Veteran’s Bike Ride. About 50 people
biked through Washington and Maryland as part of
the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride’s White
House to Lighthouse Challenge, which ended in
Annapolis yesterday. Many of the participants with
leg injuries and amputations used hand-operated
bicycles. Military veterans wore matching shirts with
an American flag motif.

Japanese Visitors
March 2008, the CCM was visited by eight students from Kanawaga Japan who taught origami and told traditional Japanese stories to visitors of the Chesapeake Children’s Museum. Many thanks to Mendy Nitsch and the International Affairs Office of the Secretary of State and to Mr. Toshiyo Ohno and Ms. Nakatsuka with the Kanagawa Board
of Education of Japan! Here participants and the Japanese girls pose for the camera.

Time is Running Out...

The deadline is approaching quickly on using state funds to add new spaces to CCM. A bond bill for $115,000 was approved in 2006, but in order to release the state funds, a match of funds, labor, and materials is required. So far, we're about halfway there.

As resources are secured, the following are planned: 1) An Owl Habitat: to house a screech owl that cannot be released into the wild due to injuries. It will be visible through a window in the museum, (between the turtle habitats), and accessible for a handler to do presentations. 2) A Multi-purpose Room: for hands-on activities for large groups, as well as community uses such as Parks and Recreation programs, family movie nights, etc. A bathroom and appliances for light cooking will be added. 3) An Elevator and Rooftop Observatory: for daytime observations of the surrounding wildlife and for nighttime observations of stars, planets, meteor showers. A totally windowed room will be used for even larger group activities, including musical and other performances. An elevator would make the building accessible at all three levels.

Please consider a tax-deductible donation to help match the state funds.

Annapolis Charter 300

The Annapolis charter celebration marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of our city's charter, the formation of a representative government in the southern colonies and the area's struggle for voting rights. The celebration, taking place in from January 2008 through March 2009, will help educate residents and visitors alike about the importance of Annapolis’ founding to our national story. The people of Annapolis and the surrounding areas will be showcased to the world during the commemoration.

  CCM Needs...

CCM could benefit greatly from some things you might have that you’re not using. CCM needs items such as a:

  • Digital Camera
  • Microphone (doesn’t have to work – but that would be a plus!) for the Center Stage exhibit

Thanks!

  Gift Membership

Know a family who would enjoy a year of admission to the Chesapeake Children’s Museum? Ask for a gift card when you buy them a Basic ($50) or Reciprocal ($110) or Funded ($150) Membership (a local family-in-need also gets a gift of membership!). There are over 100 museums across America participating in the reciprocal membership program, including Port Discovery in Baltimore. The current theme on the bus is “Animals,” which includes craft-making, storytelling, and of course, some live critters.   Volunteers Needed!

“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”
~Winston Churchill

Docents - regular weekly shift to greet visitors and keep the place tidy. Some docents like to stick to one particular exhibit area: Bay Window - help visitors meet the wildlife (water turtles, box turtles, corn snake, skinks and toads); Express Yourself (the art area ) - encourage creative use of the materials; Center Stage – (the theater) narrate stories acted out by visitors.

Finance committee - keep tabs on inflows and outflows. Look for patterns of success and room for growth. We often have Anne Arundel Community College Students looking for a specific project in accounting, and need someone to supervise their tabulations.

Programs and marketing - plan speakers/performers/facilitators in the arts, sciences and humanities, and get the word out to the public. We serve infants to middle schoolers, and parents, teachers, and other adults who work with children. Make flyers, send press releases. Coordinate with other agencies on collaborative programming.

Development - fundraising, grant writing. Plan and carry out an event, or apply for major funding. Opportunities exist to create an exhibit, a program, or an outreach effort with the support of corporations, foundations, governmental agencies, or philanthropic individuals.

Exhibits - maintain and augment the hands-on exhibits of the museum. Use your talents for: paint touch ups, replacing signs, deep cleaning, adding to or changing the learning experiences of visitors. Pick one or more areas and make them the best they can be.

Festivals – plan and carry out hands-on activities for community events, such as Chesapeake Children's Museum Day on Inner West St., Kids ‘n’ Kaboodle, or the Kunta Kinte Festival of African Heritage.

Facilities and grounds - apply some actual elbow grease or just let your fingers do the walking to round up handy folk to keep the physical needs of the museum met.

Volunteer coordination - recruit, coordinate, and support all the volunteers that help CCM to carry out its mission.

If you are curious about serving on the Board of Directors (three-year commitment), please call about your interests, and plan to attend the next monthly board meeting at the museum. Call or email: 410-990-1993, info@theccm.org. Thank you!

Birthday Parties and Group Visits at CCM

Looking for a fun, yet educational place for a group of children or families to get together? Chesapeake Children’s Museum offers group accommodations for field trips, birthday parties, or just friendly gatherings. Choose either a "free play" visit, in which you can explore the hands-on exhibits at your leisure; or a "theme workshop" in which a facilitator will also guide you through theme-based activities appropriate to the ages of the children. Popular themes include: Animals, Dinosaurs, Storytelling and Puppets, and Wizard Science. Our creative facilitators are happy to consider almost any theme your child may want (nothing violent or commercial of course!). There is a minimum charge for 10 children for either a free play visit or a theme workshop.

A free play visit is $3 per child, with one adult admitted free for every 5 children. A theme workshop is $7 per child, up to 15 children; $6 per child for 16 or more. One adult is admitted free for every 5 children. Additional adults are $3 each. The use of the group area for refreshments is an additional $20.
