The National Endowment for the Arts has again selected CCM as one of 75 nonprofits nationwide for The Big Read. These federal grants are an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. CCMs book selection is Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories. It is the first book written explicitly for The Big Read. Editor Jorge F. Hernandez collected works to present a varied landscape of Mexicos geography and cultures: from flat, arid deserts to temple huts roofed with palm leaves in jungle clearings, from a bustling market place in the big city to a romantic coastal beach. Besides romance, the stories portray moments in history, everyday life, ghost stories, and imaginative fantasy.

Childrens books will be included in our county-wide celebration of Hispanic culture. The Lizard and the Sun and others will be part of Friday morning Art and Story Times at CCM and elsewhere.
A Kick Off celebration, complete with reworks, is being planned for Saturday, September 16
- Mexican Independence Day, at the Weems-Whalen fields. Book clubs are encouraged to request free copies of Sun, Stone and Shadows. All the books will also be available from AACo Public Libraries.

The NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.
